Shannon folds the laundry
And dusts her make-up drawers.
The floor in the kitchen bends beneath her sponge.
Proud Shannon, glowing after midnight.
Her pajamas and favorite sweaters
Meet the same flannel standard.
Shannon tries a coffee from another country.
Her phone charges no faster when she checks it.
Shannon plays the albums that impress her.
The bathroom starts to shimmer.
The coffee’s smell compliments her new organic cleaning sprays.
Shannon toasts her city.
Shannon insists on opening the window.
Shannon tastes the future and imagines bragging of all she’ll one day be.
She would never brag quite yet, though,
Not with so much homework left
And the dishes still to clean.
