“To Feel Thin” – Day 9 of National Poetry Month

Tomorrow, to feel thin
I will shower first thing in the morning
And go immediately for a brisk thirty-minute walk,
Followed by as many sit-ups as I can manage.
Then I will shower again
In cold water
With the minty body wash that makes my skin explode.

I will drink a half-glass of orange juice
And take my multivitamin on an essentially empty stomach.
I will dance in front of the mirror to 80’s hair bands
And eat cucumbers soaked in vinegar as my replacement for traditional snacks.
I will pour myself no fewer than twelve individual glasses of room temperature water
And only wear blue clothes, which are the most slimming.

Tomorrow I will criticize myself for writing in a chair.
Tomorrow the love of my life will call me handsome and I will avert my eyes.
Tomorrow my reflection will frustrate me no fewer than seven times.
Tomorrow I will worry about money and wish I was successful and worry if my love is happy,
And to help, I will do more sit ups.
