“American Midnight” – Day 27 of National Poetry Month

Imperial street lamps to untamed starlight,
Striding in the unsafe carnival
Drunk on the unnamed attitude
Sober in the sight of enemies
Dangerous in the eyes of friends
Restlessly metropolitan
Sleeplessly middle American
Nervously coastal,
As the store fronts close, were already closed, stay open
Where the news reports, is received, is made
Sleeping the next day, right now, when possible
With everyone, with no one, with the one, with who will join
Logically priced, reasonably discounted,
Highway robbery
En route
In and out of every county
Impoverished bedroom windows
Indifferent personal nightlights
Late but not too late but too late
And unsettled
In the four hour American midnight
