Past home and shore and sea and stars
Beyond our hope of owning Mars,
Past planetary fashioned forms
Where stars are cold and ice is warm,
There lives someone whose name is Earl.
Earl is not man. Earl is not girl.
Earl is not light and is not sound
But large enough to strip both down.
Earl is energetic heat.
Earl is evolution’s finest feat.
Earl moves so fast, light could not be
Half as fast as he/she.
Earl pulls on atoms with a force
To reduce their marriage to divorce.
Earl’s gravity could tear and grind
Until it crushes all it finds.
What once was a neutron is electron when
It comes in contact with her/him.
Past home and shore and sea and stars
Beyond the distant sands of Mars
Where planetary forces speak
Of angels dying in the deep,
There are no people like you and me.
Only light, black holes, and energy,
And Earl, not man nor girl that way,
But life as life will be one day.
